Welcome to the HeavenGames product recommendation system! This is where you, the
HeavenGames visitor, can recommend your favorite products to other members of the
HeavenGames community. We thought that since many Heaven visitors share common
interests, it would be a great idea to provide a place where each of you can recommend
products that you've enjoyed so other Heaven visitors can discover items they may not have
known about otherwise. Our hope is that this recommendation system will enhance our
community by creating a library of products that are of interest to people who visit
HeavenGames.
To provide this service, HeavenGames has partnered with Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and
CompuExpert.com. All the products displayed will contain links to one or more of
these online merchants where you can purchase the products. If you purchase a
product after clicking on one of the links in the HG recommendation system, HeavenGames
will receive a commission of five to fifteen percent of your purchase. So by using
this system to find new products to purchase, you will also be helping HeavenGames stay
online and stay free for everyone.
So how does it work? All products are split into five categories: Games, DVDs,
Books, CDs and Other. Each person will have their own page which will be split into
categories based on what they have recommended. For an example, check out HeavenGames' recommended products.
The first category displayed is Games since have recommended more games than any
other category. At the top of the list, you will see a toggle between Games and
Books with a number indicating how many of that product category are in the list.
You won't see toggles for DVDs, CDs or Misc since we have not made any
recommendations in those categories. At the top right of the page, you will see a
drop-down list filled with names of forummers at HG. Use this drop-down list to see the
products recommended by other members of the HeavenGames community.
If you find a product that is of interest to you, you can click one of the links provided
within the item's listing. There will always be a link to amazon.com and if the
product is available, links to amazon.co.uk. Interestingly enough, the two amazon
sites have different inventory so some products available at amazon.com are not available
at amazon.co.uk. Also, if the product is a game and is available at CompuExpert, you
will also see a link to their site. CompuExpert's prices are typically a little
better than Amazon and HeavenGames receives a larger commission from game sales made
through CompuExpert, so that's why we include links there.
Ok, so you've checked out some other people's recommendations and you decide you want to
make some recommendations of your own. How do you do that? Thankfully, it's
very simple. At the top right of the page, you will see a link to "Add a new
recommendation". Clicking that link will bring you to a login page if you have
not recently logged into the recommendation system. Login with your HG forum name
and password. Once past that, you'll see the new recommendation screen. There
are 4 very simple fields to fill out: Category, Amazon.com ASIN/ISDN, Product Title and
Product Desc. Category is easy... simply choose the appropriate category for you product.
Title and Desc are also easy... just fill in whatever text you want to tell other
people about why you enjoy the product. Please note that the desc field is limited
to 256 characters and if you type more text than that, you will get a warning on
submission and your description will be truncated.
The last and most important field to complete when making a new recommendation is the
Amazon ASIN/ISDN number. Every product on Amazon.com has a number that uniquely
identifies that product. For Books, the number is an ISDN number, for every other
product type, it's a ASIN number. You can find that number on the detail page of
every product at Amazon.com. ISDNs will be something like "0740112345"
while ASINs will look like "M07345012". Copy and paste this number from
Amazon.com to you new product recommendation to ensure its accuracy. An incorrect
Amazon.com ID will cause your recommendation to be removed from the system since we will
have no way to link back to your product. One other very important item to note is
that you must use the Amazon.com number - NOT the Amazon.co.uk number. The numbers
are usually different between the two sites so using the Amazon.co.uk number will be
invalid and your recommendation will likely be removed, so even if you normally shop at
Amazon.co.uk, to make a recommendation, you must use the Amazon.com number.
After making a recommendation, you will receive a confirmation page that will allow you to
make more recommendations or simply return to the product list. If you are still
logged in and look at your own recommendations page, you will notice Edit links next to
all of your products. Clicking that link will allow you to correct any mistakes you
might have made, or remove the product from your list entirely. You will not be able
to edit the Amazon.com ID number so make sure that is correct the first time!
When your recommendation is first posted, if noone else has recommended the same product,
it will be listed with no image and a link only to Amazon.com. On a regular basis,
the HG staff will check for new products and add the images and other links as
appropriate. You cannot add the images or other links yourself as we have a special
process that handles those processes.
That's all there is to it! For your convenience, we have also added a page for recently added recommendations so you can
easily see what various people are adding to the system. As more products are
entered, we may also include some other pages like most recommended products and other
things like that.
One other thing that we strongly encourage each of you to do is to add a link to your own
personal recommendations page into your forum signature so every time you post a note in
our forums, everyone can see a link to your favorite products. Adding the link is
easy... here's what the link to the HeavenGames page looks like:

Copy that line exactly but change the text after "user=" to your own Forum Name.
So the link to my personal recommendation page would look like:

Simply add that line with your own forum name filled in to your forum signature and let
everyone know about the products you enjoy.
